Day 30. Your Personality

A little bit crazy, a little bit desperate. That’s me.

Day 31. Something beautiful

20120601-155705.jpg

A perfectly seared filet steak, cut paper thin. Served in a seaweed hand roll with rice, Japanese mayo, wasabi, scallions and Japanese pepper. Beautifully delicious.

June 2012

Day 1. Morning

20120601-155917.jpg

Wakey, wakey, monsters! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hello, June! How did you get here so fast?

A number

29. A Number

20120530-100851.jpg

Yesterday, I had my first golf lesson. Who would have thunk it? ๐Ÿ™‚ Donegal Golf Club in Murvagh is absolutely amazing. I have zero golf experience so I wouldn’t know one course from another but it was so pretty last night.

20120530-101701.jpg

I was “recruited” by the lady’s captain who I got chatting to the other day and Caroline and I went down for the Craic. We did chip shots and L shots- totally not golf terms but that’s how I’ll remember them. I know it was only my first lesson but I’m a bit dubious about actually playing a round of golf, but I have to say, I enjoyed whacking an inanimate object into the distance repeatedly. ๐Ÿ™‚

Weather

28. The weather today

20120528-201900.jpg

An unimaginative post, I was too busy enjoying the Donegal heat wave to take photos ๐Ÿ™‚ I don’t have another day off until Saturday and who knows if this weather will last til then.

I would have spent all day on the roof getting a tan today but I had two meetings in letterkenny which turned out to be very productive and very positive as well! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Here’s hoping they take off!

Sweet

27. Something sweet

20120527-165749.jpg

I would have lived my life quite happily if I had never discovered dolly mixture. It’s an British sweet that is pure sugar. I don’t eat them often, but when I get a hankering for them, I will eat a full pound bag and be sick for the rest of the week. Even my kids won’t eat it cos its too sweet!

Unusual

25. Unusual

20120525-133756.jpg

It is hotter in Donegal than in Malaga, Spain today. If that is not unusual, I don’t know what is. I will be in Ireland for 12 years on the 11th of July and I’ve only gotten a tan here once. And that was the year tens of thousands died all across Europe from heat stroke and forest fires. Seriously.

As the Irish are fond of saying, long may it last! (the good weather, not the dying part)

New!

25. Something new!!!

A new photo I took today!

Pink

Oh, I’m running a day behind. I got the photo taken but didn’t get a chance to post yesterday. Its been so busy but I’m not complaining. Come September everything will have quietened down. I refuse to get sick over my busy wedding period and back to back shoots on top of my tour guiding stint and of course the kids. I can get sick in October.

G is doing the ISL sign for pink in the photo. I’ve missed the last 2 classes and I’m really hoping I don’t have to drop it. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I teach her a few signs each week and she remembers signs for words she likes like dance, pink, rainbow, pet, etc ๐Ÿ™‚ I suppose like any other language, you lose it when you don’t use it regularly so we try to practice together. It’s a bit frustrating that ISL is different to ASL and BSL too.

Anyway, I took the kids to see peppa pig live in Derry today.

I managed to snap this before they made an announcement that photos weren’t allowed ( apparently due to child protection)- oops!

We had an awesome day. It was actually warm today (18-21c IS warm in Ireland). G kept saying it was like being in the Philippines. She was so happy to be wearing a sleeveless dress and no leggings. She kept saying how she only wears “no sleeves” in Manila. And then when we went to the multi storey car park, she said, “Mummy, are you sure we’re not in the Philippines? This car park looks like the Philippines! It smells like it too!”

And when we went through the mall she said it was definitely like my home- full of shopping! Ah, my little country mouse.

Max was also amused that he was wearing shorts. He kept asking what happened to his trousers and kept pulling them down to cover his legs.

We were on our way home when Gia said she had to go to the loo and we stopped in KFC. It was getting late so I thought I’d get them something to eat. I got them popcorn chicken and chips and off we went in the car. Five minutes later, Gabriella informed me that she was not eating any of it cos it wasn’t real food!

We ended up stopping at a hotel and I got them some pasta. I am grateful that my kids don’t care for junk/fast food, just makes it awkward when there’s no where else to go. Neither of them will eat anything in mc donalds either. Maybe fries, in a push. Nor do they like soda, thank goodness. I’ll have enough dentists bills in the future with braces ( and it’s already evident Gabriella will need them) without having to contend with rotten teeth as well. We still get funny looks when she tells people at birthday parties that she doesn’t drink soda. And I’m being totally judgemental when I say who serves soda at a 5 year olds birthday party anyway! ๐Ÿ™‚

If only I can wean them off chocolate!

Stand

21. Where you stand

I have two photos today.

20120521-214127.jpg

The first is simply where I stand.

Today is the first day there is any real hope for a bit of summer sunshine. The fact that I’m not wearing my wooly boots is a call for celebration. ๐Ÿ™‚

20120521-214222.jpg

The second is taking a stand. We make choices all the time, the line in the sand isn’t always clear and sometimes there is more than one line. I like the concept of the photo, if not the execution. Love/hate is very black and white. There is also indifference, apathy, dislike, like and the other shades of grey goes on. I could have chosen any two words or issues, yes and no would have covered a whole gamut of things as well. But of course I was impatient to get it done with very limited materials.

So for the moment, this is where I stand.

Necessity

20. Something you can’t live without.

Let’s face it, I *can* live without my iPhone. I totally agree with all the haters about how it’s a time suck and perpetuates non face to face interaction and how it doesn’t let you disconnect or just BE.

But when I was doing endless feedings in the middle of the night, it kept me awake enough so that I wouldn’t drop the baby.

And when max used my reader as a hammer, iBooks saved the day. Because if it’s one thing I really can’t live without, it’s books.

20120520-115801.jpg

That’s what I really can’t live without. I’ve been a voracious reader for as long as I can remember. There is nothing and no where you can’t do or go to if you read. Simple as that.

One of the most important legacies I can give my children is an appreciation for reading. I hope they enjoy it half as much as I do.

And I won’t start the debate vs “real” books and ebooks. I love both, I buy both. You can’t beat the smell and feel and tactile experience of holding an actual book. And neither can you beat carrying your library of 400+ books in your pocket.

Get reading!
